A one-minute, real-time video of my painting process.

I step up to the painty table. Look around at my tubes of paint. Take a few deep breaths to shake off the day. Let my gaze soften until a tube of paint catches my attention. And from there, I begin to dance with the paints.

One mark leads to another, one color calls to the next, and before I know it, I have the beginnings of a painting. Somewhere along the way, I begin to get a sense of what I want to paint — on this day, it was an abstract.

Marks and scribbles and dabs of paint. Bright red collage paper. A whisper of pink scribbles. Some mark making and splashes of paint, and this page felt complete.

I’ve put together a short little process video that I am sharing here with you first, before I upload it anywhere else. It’s all in real time. I haven’t sped anything up — so yes, I am scribbling and painting that fast. Not giving myself time to think…to just trust the process and the painting unfolding before me.

I’m also wondering: Would you be interested in receiving a full-length, real-time painting demonstration once a month? I won’t necessarily be teaching techniques; but watching the painting process, in real time (with maybe just the boring, repetitive bits sped up a bit), can be a good way to pick up some ideas for your own art practice.
