Let's put together a small mixed media art journaling travel kit for your next holiday!

As a mixed media artist, I’m used to working with ALL the supplies — a wide variety of paints, markers, collage papers, pastels and pencils, thread and fabrics, stamps and stencils. I like having it all at my finger tips, so I can pull from this pool of supplies as inspiration strikes.

And while I do have some favorites and familiar tools that I use most often, I’ve almost always dismissed the idea of being able to create mixed media pieces in my journals when I travel.

During previous travels, I’ve generally carried a small sketchbook, some pencils, and a set of watercolors — not something that’s in my wheelhouse — and made do, somehow, with that. But then, most of those travels have been relatively short, so I haven’t had too much time to miss my usual supplies.

This month, though, I’m off on a slightly longer vacation; I’m flying back home to Pune, to meet my parents and my sister and nieces, who are here from the US. And this time, that minimal set-up isn’t going to cut it for me. So I decided to put together a little mixed media kit to carry along with me.

I’m not sure how much time I will get to play in my journal, but I do know that my niece and I will be painting together. I’ve sent ahead a set of acrylic paints and a nice big sketchbook for her, and I’m hoping that we can paint together in my little journal as well.
