Create a portable art studio!
Let's put together a small mixed media art journaling travel kit for your next holiday!
As a mixed media artist, I’m used to working with ALL the supplies — a wide variety of paints, markers, collage papers, pastels and pencils, thread and fabrics, stamps and stencils. I like having it all at my finger tips, so I can pull from this pool of supplies as inspiration strikes.
And while I do have some favorites and familiar tools that I use most often, I’ve almost always dismissed the idea of being able to create mixed media pieces in my journals when I travel.
During previous travels, I’ve generally carried a small sketchbook, some pencils, and a set of watercolors — not something that’s in my wheelhouse — and made do, somehow, with that. But then, most of those travels have been relatively short, so I haven’t had too much time to miss my usual supplies.
This month, though, I’m off on a slightly longer vacation; I’m flying back home to Pune, to meet my parents and my sister and nieces, who are here from the US. And this time, that minimal set-up isn’t going to cut it for me. So I decided to put together a little mixed media kit to carry along with me.

I’m not sure how much time I will get to play in my journal, but I do know that my niece and I will be painting together. I’ve sent ahead a set of acrylic paints and a nice big sketchbook for her, and I’m hoping that we can paint together in my little journal as well.
Let’s put together a travel kit for mixed media art journaling
Join me at the painty table as I put together a small travel mixed media art journaling kit to carry along with me. It’s the perfect little kit to take along to a coffee shop too, for an artist date!
I hope you found some interesting ideas and ways to think about creating a travel art kit based on the supplies you love!
I’m also putting together a little journaling kit to take with me, with pens and stickers and washi. I’ll be carrying my daily memory keeping journal, and probably another small A6 journal for more long-form writing. Would you like to see what’s in that kit? Let me know, and I’ll put together a little video for you!
Let’s chat!
I love chatting with you in the comments or via e-mail. Here are a few questions to help us get the conversation rolling:
Do you carry your sketchbook along with you on vacations?
Do you switch up your art making style when you’re traveling?
What are your must-have art supplies when you’re off on vacation?
Would you like to see what I’m carrying in my journaling kit?

Different media, but I always bring a notebook with me when I travel. I’m away fro a weekend right now and even brought a chapter I’m currently editing because who knows when I’ll have time to work on it or what inspiration will strike!
I have a tiny dry-media (graphite) travel sketchbook, but I always forget it. I'm not ready to give up yet, but what has worked much better in the past is to carry my actual current sketchbook, and just grab 1-3 pens/pencils/pastels on my way out the door. I never forgot to do that.
