Let's paint an abstract mixed media art journal page

Join me at the painty table as I show you how I created this abstract mixed media painting.

There’s nothing I love more than loose, messy mark making. No fixed outcome in mind. Just allowing myself to get lost in the process of laying down colors and marks and words and images.

Intentional forms, words, and symbols work their way into my painting, but it’s always through an intuitive impulse to paint, scrape, add marks, bring out and refine certain shapes. Even adding in collage papers or focal images is almost always intuitive — as I look at the painting, I feel a pull to add in a certain element, an image, a piece of collage. In this way, the painting tells me what it wants, rather that me imposing my idea of what a painting should be.

There’s a certain freedom and serendipity to this process, which keeps my art practice fresh and my creativity flowing.
